WHOIS Lookup
What is WHOIS?
WHOIS (pronounced "who is") is a query and response protocol used to retrieve information about domain name registrations. When a domain is registered, the registrant provides contact details that are stored in a public database. A WHOIS lookup lets you see who owns a domain, when it was registered, when it expires, and which registrar manages it.
Why Look Up WHOIS Data?
WHOIS data is useful for many purposes: verifying domain ownership before purchasing, checking if a domain will expire soon, identifying the hosting provider, or investigating potential phishing or spam domains. Since the introduction of GDPR in 2018, many registrars now redact personal contact information, but organizational and technical data is usually still visible.
WHOIS FAQs
Under GDPR and similar privacy regulations, registrars often replace personal contact details with proxy or privacy service information. You'll typically see the registrar's contact info instead of the domain owner's personal details.
WHOIS data is pulled from the official RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) system, which is the modern standard replacing the old WHOIS protocol. Registration data is as accurate as what the registrant provided at registration time.
